The Manchester of India
Ludhiana is the beating heart of India's apparel trade. For generations the city's spinning mills, knitting units and garment houses have clothed the country — earning it the title 'Manchester of India'. Around 95% of India's woollen and acrylic knitwear is produced here, and the cluster supplies more than 90% of the apparel made for the domestic market.
Behind those numbers is an ecosystem few cities in the world can match: over 14,000 micro, small and medium enterprises spanning spinning, weaving, knitting, processing and garmenting, providing direct and indirect livelihoods to roughly four lakh people. From high-fashion winterwear to everyday essentials, if it is knitted or stitched in India, chances are it began its journey in Ludhiana.

Exhibitions, advocacy and a united trade
LRGMA's flagship platform is the LRGMA Garment Exhibition at Punjab Agricultural University — now in its 8th edition — alternating dedicated Spring–Summer and Autumn–Winter editions that keep buyers and manufacturers connected through every season. A recent three-day expo drew 3,000–4,000 trade buyers to stalls from 50+ exhibitors across kidswear, menswear and womenswear.
Beyond the exhibition floor, the association is the industry's voice before government. LRGMA represents Ludhiana's garment manufacturers in consultations with the Excise & Taxation department on GST and tax matters, and works year-round to resolve the everyday challenges of running a manufacturing unit — so that members can focus on making, and the association can focus on everything around it.
